From the Coordinator ... Linda Barry

Congratulations to the Fall Fest Committee for an excellent gardening program on September 16. Alyce Zellers chaired the committee, and her energy and enthusiasm were contagious. Marion Yaglinski spent countless hours grooming and labeling the hundreds of plants that you donated, and the reward was $522 in sales. Lisa Augustine came in after work on many days to clean, price and prepare the Frugal Gardener items. That table earned a profit of $328.00. Fifty Master Gardeners either volunteered at the Fall Fest or attended the event. Thanks to everyone who helped to make it a great day.

The new State Master Gardener Coordinator has asked me to be one of the three representatives from the Southeast Region on her MG State Steering Committee. Our first meeting will be held in November. If you have suggestions for improving the program, please send them to me.

Thanks for entering/sending your volunteer hours. If you still need hours for this year, we have many activities going on. We particularly need volunteers for the teaching gardens. You may select your own days and times. If you would like to help, please contact the chairperson (s) for the garden that interests you. Delilah Foldes and Stephen Hinds for the Hillside Garden, Kathy Hornberger for the Bird and Butterfly Garden, Carl Pfeiffer and Marion Nelson for the Terrace Garden, and Carolyn DiPaulo and Maru Hollen for the Shade Garden. Thanks to the efforts of these chairpersons and their committees, the Teaching Gardens have steadily improved. They looked great for the Fall Fest!

We will be preparing the Master Gardener Directory for 2007 next month. In order to save printing and mailing costs and paper, we will not be sending the entire list of Volunteer Opportunities to the membership. Marty Roelandt will include changes to the list in the November newsletter. Please look at the 2006 lists for members' contact information and the Volunteer Opportunities and let me know if you wish to make changes in your committee selections or contact information. If you have misplaced either, we can send you a replacement. Committee chairs - please read your committee description on the 2006 Volunteer Opportunities document and send any changes to Marty as soon as possible. If you need additional volunteers for your committee, you may wish to add that to your write-up.

The Hortline Committee has completed the Hortline Manual and will present the completed project to the membership at October's meeting. Congratulations to this talented and dedicated group of volunteers from the class of 2005!

The Social Committee is planning our Holiday Party for December 3 at Ridley Creek State Park. An invitation and RSVP will be included in the November newsletter. Please respond promptly so that the committee can order the correct amount of food.

We have printed tickets to make a donation to the Master Gardener Memorial Bench. Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. One lucky donor will be selected at random to receive two vouchers for a round-trip flight for US domestic travel anywhere in the USAirways route system. (Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands are included!) The winner will be chosen at the Holiday Party. Tickets are available in the office and at the monthly

From MG President ... Alyce R. Zellers

Ahhhh, autumn!

It really is a great time of the year for just about everything. Yes, the flowers are lovely in the summer but with it comes hot weather that sometimes makes you hesitant to go outside to enjoy them. The fall offers lots of opportunities to go outside and reflect on your garden in cooler, more color-enhancing air as well admire the changing leaves. With the shortening days my appreciation of nature increases more due to the oncoming months when I will only be thinking of perennials, compost, plant sales, etc..

Why is it that most gardeners do not tend to plant a garden devoted to reds, oranges and yellow but when fall returns, we all fall in love with the combination when decorating with mums, pumpkins, Indian corn and we especially love those same colors of the changing trees?? Living on the East Coast we are fortunate to have the change of seasons so that we can all take the time to slow down and count our blessings that maybe throughout the past season we made a difference through gardening. Hopefully we planted a few more shrubs for the birds, maybe included more host and nectar plants for butterflies, put in a water feature or added more birdhouses. Whatever it is, fall should be the time to step back and just say "ahhh!!, this is what life is all about". So after reading this, go out and buy some unusual varieties of apples, (hint: Macouns or Ida Reds), put your flannel shirt/sweatshirt on, take a leisurely walk around your garden, pick up and admire some fall leaves and take on the attitude of a wooly bear caterpillar; just lumber along and let everything just brush right off.

Whatever way you enjoy fall, just don't imitate the squirrels and chipmunks, who are currently scurrying around like last-minute Christmas shoppers and similarly, probably won't remember where they hid those nuts.

Almost ex-president,
Alyce R. Zellers
