Gardening Tips for Early Spring

By Joe Daniels

As weather permits, clean up stray leaves, winter debris, remaining stems and anything left undone last fall. Try not to step in beds where the soil is still wet.

Cut back ornamental grasses.

Pull some of the winter mulch off of your perennial beds so the soil can warm up.

Turn the compost pile.

Take a soil test.

Fertilize gardens at the end of March to early April.

Mow liriope.

Remove dead leaves from evergreen plants.

Cut back plants that were left for winter interest.

Begin some cool weather vegetable seedlings in the garden at the end of March or beginning of April (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, onion sets). Plant seeds of lettuce, spinach, radish, carrot, beet, turnip and peas.
