The Master Gardener Program

Penn State Cooperative Extension provides Master Gardener volunteers over 40 hours of instruction in horticulture. Instruction is provided by Penn State staff, county extension agents and horticultural professionals.

Training topics include:
  • Plant science
  • Soil and Composting
  • Plant Identification
  • Plant pathology (disease)
  • Entomology (insects)
  • Diagnosing Plant Problems
  • Integrated Pest Management
  • Planting and Pruning
  • Plant Propagation
  • Turf
  • Vegetable Gardening
There is a fee to cover printed course materials.

In exchange for the instruction, participants must agree to provide at least 50 hours of volunteer time to the Delaware County Master Gardener program. There are many types of volunteer activities that individuals can choose from.

To maintain their status as a Master Gardener, individuals must continue to provide 20 hours of volunteer service annually.

In addition, Master Gardeners must complete at least 8 hours of continuing education annually. The Master Gardener program provides many opportunities for continuing education, including such things as "hands on" workshops, lectures, and training sessions.

The next Master Gardener Training Class will begin in August 2009.
